California Democrats visit Adelanto ICE detention facility
A group of California House Democrats said staff at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center kept them waiting more than half an hour Friday and used the time to mop floors and lock detainees in their cells before the lawmakers unannounced inspection of the state's largest immigration detention center.
Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, led the visit. He said the delegation did not tell U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement it was coming.[1]
"They kept us around for over 30 minutes, and once we started walking in, it became clear why," Garcia said at a news conference outside the facility.

NJ Rep. Mejia on ICE detention center in Roxbury: ‘They cannot self-police’
It flies in the face of a court order, Mejia said.
A court order was issued earlier this year, prohibiting ICE from using the facility at all until after an environmental review. Mejia joins PIX on Politics with Dan Mannarino to discuss the Roxbury facility DHS plans to use as a detention center. The Congresswoman says DHS' letter was sent to her after hearing from constituents about activity taking place at the warehouse.[2]
Courts & Lawsuits
ICE Detainees Ask Judge To Intervene Over ‘Inhumane’ Texas Camp
ICE detainees are asking a federal judge to intervene at the agency's largest detention camp, citing sworn accounts alleging that guards beat people who resisted removal to Mexico and that masked personnel allegedly beat others and ordered them to cross the southern border.
The motion for a preliminary injunction, filed Thursday in federal court in El Paso, Texas, concerns Camp East Montana, a sprawling immigration detention facility at Fort Bliss. The request is backed by declarations from 43 people, including current or former detainees and relatives or friends of those who died, 29 medical records, four government oversight reports and two expert declarations. Plaintiffs argue the conditions amount to unconstitutional punishment under the Fifth Amendment.[3]

Days after a Pittsfield family lost its home in a fire, ICE detained the father of a 5-month-old girl in New York.
Now, the family is struggling to recover from the fire while seeking his release. On Oct. 9, Tugba Merino and Serkan Bingol’s apartment at 211 Springside Ave. burned. Two days later, Bingol was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.[5]

Texas trooper used encrypted app to help ICE detain high school senior, prompting DPS warning
A Texas Department of Public Safety official warned troopers against using third-party messaging applications to communicate with other law enforcement agencies after body camera footage showed a trooper using Signal to help coordinate the detention of an 18-year-old high school student by federal immigration authorities.
The warning followed the publication of a video showing the trooper sending information about the teenager to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement through the encrypted messaging app. An ICE agent responded with one word: “Detain.” Emails obtained by KPRC 2’s investigative team show that concerns about Signal and other messaging platforms were not new.[7]
ICE returns suspect in Oregon newlyweds' crash ahead of 2027 trial
The Briefing: – Kumar faces two counts of first-degree manslaughter and three counts of recklessly endangering another person in Deschutes County, Oregon.
– Deschutes County released Kumar in April 2026 without honoring an active ICE detainer; federal officers re-arrested him 20 days later, on April 22; a federal immigration judge ordered his deportation on July 1. – Kumar is now held at Deschutes County Jail without bail on a $1 million arrest warrant, with his criminal trial set for January 2027 — after which ICE says deportation proceedings will resume. William Micah Carter and Jennifer Lynn Lower had been husband and wife for just 16 days when they died on a darkened central Oregon highway. The man charged with causing that crash — Rajinder Kumar, a 32-year-old Indian national who entered the United States illegally — walked out of a county jail about four months later because local officials declined to honor a federal immigration hold.[8]
