Detention & Deaths

Detainees at a third U.S. immigration detention center go on hunger strike, including Russian nationals

More than 30 people have gone on hunger strike at the El Valle immigration detention facility in Texas, the mother of one of the protesters told Vot Tak.

She said 15 women began the hunger strike October 11, and 20 men, including Russians, joined them later. The protesters say they face poor detention conditions and a lack of medical care, and are demanding that their rights be upheld. They say, if you want, go ahead and sit there, starve.[1]

Traffic stop leads to pursuit in Page County, suspect now in ICE custody

The Page County Sheriff’s Office says that on October 15, 2026, at approximately 7:43 a.m., a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Ford F-550 in the area of U.S. Highway 211 and Northcott Drive in Luray, Virginia, for an expired Virginia state inspection sticker dated March 2024.

The Sheriff’s Office says U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that the driver was in the United States illegally, had prior assault charges in Maryland, and had an alleged association with the 18th Street Gang. Officials stated that as the deputy directed the driver to exit the truck, the driver fled in the vehicle which caused a brief vehicle pursuit to ensue, ending near U.S. Highway 211 East and Whispering Hill Road in Luray, where the driver crashed the truck. Following the crash, police say the suspect fled on foot, leading to a brief foot pursuit and a subsequent standoff with law enforcement.[2]

Courts & Lawsuits

Trump Admin Wins Court Battle Against California Law Requiring ICE Agents to Display Identification During Raids

A federal appeals court has ruled that California cannot require federal immigration officers to visibly display identification while conducting enforcement operations, finding that the state's No Vigilantes Act likely violates the U.S. Constitution's Supremacy Clause.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit directed a lower court to issue a preliminary injunction against the law, which requires plainclothes law enforcement officers to display identification while performing their duties. The ruling, reported by The Hill, follows an earlier suspension of the measure and represents another legal development in the Trump administration's dispute with California over immigration enforcement. The appeals court found that states cannot directly regulate federal government operations without congressional authorization, even when the same requirements apply to state officers.[3]

Lane County men detained amid uptick in Oregon ICE activity, court records show

QuickTake: “A nationwide public safety surge in sanctuary cities” apparently has included Lane County, although it’s hard to say how many people have been picked up by ICE agents in recent weeks.

A rise in arrests across Oregon by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has affected Lane County. ICE officers pulled over a construction worker at about 5:30 a.m. Sept. 29 in Eugene, according to court documents that argued the man’s detention was unlawful. A day earlier, Sept. 28, a group of mostly masked ICE officers in three vehicles pulled over a man in Eugene and detained him, according to court documents.[4]

Raids & Arrests

Gov. Mills says she disapproves of ICE's presence in Maine after Sanford arrest

PORTLAND (WGME) – After the arrest of a man who allegedly crashed his car into an ICE vehicle in Sanford Thursday, Governor Janet Mills says she’s been clear from the start on her position on the agency’s presence in Maine.

“That needs to change, and a strong Senate and a strong Congress will change that regardless of what the President thinks or Homeland Security thinks.” Congresswoman Chellie Pingree also released a statement after the incident.[5]

“I disapprove of their presence in Maine, I disapprove of their budget, I disapprove of their tactics all across the country,” Mills said.

Delco nurse detained by ICE on Disneyland trip; Philly supporters rally

She completed her first check-in at the ICE office in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Arriving with a GPS ankle monitor on her leg while surrounded by supporters, Monica Ryadi was filled with feelings of frustration and gratitude outside the ICE office in Philadelphia's Chinatown section. Ryadi said she's a registered nurse for Main Line Health and is now in the middle of a battle to stay in the country.[6]

"I'm overwhelmed with support," Ryadi said.

Oversight & Policy

DNA from immigration detention solves 2001 DuPage County sexual assault

A DuPage County judge this week convicted a man of a 2001 sexual assault that sat unsolved for more than two decades — until his DNA was submitted to a national database when he was detained for illegally entering the United States in 2022.

Alberto Gomez’s case will now proceed to post-trial motions, with sentencing expected in the coming weeks, DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin’s office said. At approximately 4:22 a.m. on November 25, 2001, a West Chicago woman was alone in her apartment when she realized a man, later identified as Gomez, was inside, prosecutors said. The investigation found that Gomez struck the woman multiple times in the face, head, and stomach before pushing her onto a bed and sexually assaulting her.[7]

Immigrants sue ICE over passports, cash and phones

Seven immigrants have sued U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, accusing the agency of keeping their belongings for months after their release from detention.

Their lawsuit says the missing documents have left some unable to find work, drive, or prove their identity. Their proposed class action, filed Oct. 13 in federal court in Washington, says the practice has persisted since January 2025, when President Donald Trump began his second term. The cost of missing belongings By the filing date, each plaintiff had been missing important property for at least five months despite requests for its return, the complaint says.[8]
