As reported by Yahoo:

Truck stops nationwide were warned to "proceed with caution" Tuesday by a major industry group after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to promote the use of "red dye" diesel fuel.

Red dye diesel is exempt from federal excise taxes because it is intended for farm equipment and other off-road uses.

The order, signed before farmers in Nebraska on Monday night, aims to bring down fuel prices by "temporarily" allowing highway use of red dye diesel fuel, according to a White House statement.

U.S. voters are deeply frustrated by the high price of gas, and the Trump administration is under intense pressure to bring down fuel costs before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

Monday's order instructs Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to "defer certain diesel fuel tax payment obligations and to provide penalty relief to the extent permitted by law." It does not waive the federal taxes, because only Congress can eliminate a tax.[1]

On the record

Truck stops nationwide were warned to "proceed with caution" Tuesday by a major industry group after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to promote the use of "red dye" diesel fuel.[1]

WATCH: Trump campaigns with Ricketts in Nebraska, signs order on red-dyed diesel "In the context of diesel prices that are over two dollars more than they were last year, it just doesn't come close to closing that wound," said Matt Perdue, president of the North Dakota Farmers Union.[2]

The numbers in the reporting

$100
"President Trump's executive action will quickly cut diesel costs and put money directly back into the pockets of American truckers, saving them over $100 every time they refill at the gas pump," she told NBC News.[1]
$6.30
Diesel averaged $6.30 per gallon across the country on Wednesday, more than 70% higher than one year ago, according to motor club AAA.[2]
$3.76
Since the war with Iran began, the price of diesel has surged from $3.76 per gallon to $6.32 as of Tuesday, a nearly 70% increase.[1]
$0.24
The executive order defers the $0.24 federal tax per gallon of regular diesel, used for road projects, until the end of the year.[2]

What PBS reports

Farmers, truckers and economists say a move to cut taxes on diesel will provide little relief from record-high fuel prices that have soared since the U.S. attacked Iran months ago.

Industry groups said they appreciate President Donald Trump's executive order expanding the use of a diesel now reserved for off-road work, but farmers already have access to the fuel and many have already wrapped up harvest. Truckers will struggle to navigate differing state rules.[2]

What the official record says

Whitehouse says, in its own words:

Whitehouse says, in its own words:

PUTTING MONEY BACK INTO THE POCKETS OF AMERICANS: President Trump is addressing fuel affordability for American consumers, farmers, truckers, and workers.[5]

Additionally, the Trump Administration has delivered over $40 billion in direct aid to farmers since January 2025. – Since President Trump returned to office, the Trump Administration has prioritized American truckers, replacing illegal immigrant truck drivers with American veterans.[5]
