Earth Changes · Daily Report · October 7, 2026, 6:30 AM CDT

Hurricane Rachel is churning in the eastern Pacific with top winds near 80 mph and a central pressure of 979 millibars, moving west-northwest at 7 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.[1] It is one of 2 tropical systems the center is tracking, along with Tropical Storm Isaias.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has 70 severe or extreme alerts in effect, led by 12 hurricane force wind warnings across PK.[2]

Elsewhere, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck 264 km SSW of Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia at 4:48 p.m. UTC on Oct. 6, about 26 km (≈16 miles) below the surface, the U.S. Geological Survey reports[3]. The USGS PAGER system rates the expected impact GREEN. It was one of 20 quakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater in the past day.

Today at a Glance

  • 20 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater, the largest M5.9
  • 2 active tropical systems: Hurricane Rachel, Tropical Storm Isaias
  • 70 severe or extreme U.S. weather alerts
  • 4 U.S. volcanoes above normal, including Great Sitkin, Kilauea
  • 3 sinkhole reports in the news

The Storm Prediction Center says no severe thunderstorm areas are forecast today.[4]

Around the world, GDACS logged 52 wildfire, 3 flood, 2 earthquake, 1 tropical cyclone notices in the past two days, all at its lowest (Green) level.[5]

2. Earthquakes

The USGS recorded 20 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater in the past 24 hours.[6] The strongest:

Mag. Where When Depth PAGER
5.9 264 km SSW of Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia Oct. 6, 4:48 p.m. UTC 26 km GREEN
5.5 92 km NNW of Aleneva, Alaska Oct. 6, 6:34 p.m. UTC 88 km GREEN
5.1 34 km NNW of Bāgeshwar, India Oct. 6, 4:53 p.m. UTC 10 km GREEN

4.9 48 km NNE of Semporna, Malaysia Oct. 6, 1:11 p.m. UTC 10 km —

PAGER is the USGS estimate of likely deaths and damage: GREEN means little or none expected, RED means extensive. A dash means none was issued.

3. Volcanoes

In the United States, 4 volcanoes are above normal background activity, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s observatories:

Volcano Alert / aviation code Latest word from scientists
Great Sitkin Watch / Orange Slow eruption of lava within the summit crater continues.[7]
Kilauea Watch / Orange A shallow intrusion occurred beneath Halemaʻumaʻu at the summit Kīlauea volcano Sep 30–Oct 1. At present there is minor spattering at both north and south vents. It is not possible to forecast the onset of episode 55 fountains or if they will occur.[8]
Ahyi Seamount Advisory / Yellow No plumes seen in satellite images; no significant geophysical signals.[9]
Shishaldin Advisory / Yellow Low-level unrest continues.[7]

Alert levels run Normal, Advisory, Watch, Warning. Aviation codes run Green, Yellow, Orange, Red.

4. Sinkholes

No government agency publishes a live national sinkhole feed, so these come from today’s local news:

  • Daily Hampshire Gazette reports, “EASTHAMPTON — Ferry Street could be closed for several weeks as workers identify the severity of a century-old pipe that burst, opening a large sinkhole in the middle of the roadway last week.”[10]
  • Bangor, Pennsylvania: WFMZ.com reports, “A sinkhole caused the closure of a road in Bangor, Northampton County.”[11]
  • Majorca Daily Bulletin reports, “All three lanes of Avenida Gabriel Alomar in Palma, heading towards the Paseo Maritimo, have been closed after a sinkhole opened in the road near the military barracks.”[12]

5. What the Experts Say

These are the words of the scientists and forecasters who watch these hazards for a living, quoted exactly.

“Satellite imagery indicates that Rachel's convective organization has changed little over the past several hours. The deepest convection remains focused over the southern semicircle, with limited convection over the northern portion of the cyclone due to dry air intrusions and modest easterly shear. A 0426 UTC MetOp-B scatterometer pass helped refine the wind radii and structure of the cyclone. Based on these data and the largely unchanged satellite presentation, the initial intensity is held at 70 kt.”

— Forecaster Pierce/Gibbs, National Hurricane Center, on Hurricane Rachel[13]

“Satellite imagery depicts a bursting pattern with the tropical cyclone this morning, with cloud top temperatures below -85 C in the deep convection close to the estimated center. Earlier, an 0307 UTC ASCAT-C pass suggested the low-level circulation was still rather broad, with a peak wind retrieval of only 31 kt. However, the bursting convection already appears to be tightening up the circulation somewhat, with a nearby surface observation from a buoy north of the center recently reporting a sustained 10 m adjusted wind of 35 kt. This information is enough to upgrade the depression to Tropical Storm Isaias for this advisory. This initial intensity will be 35 kt, which also agrees with the 06 UTC Dvorak fix of T2.5/35 kt. Both Air Force Reserve and NOAA Hurricane Hunter reconnaissance missions are scheduled to sample the tropical storm later today.”

— Forecaster Papin, National Hurricane Center, on Tropical Storm Isaias[14]

“Severe storms are not expected across the U.S. today.”

— NOAA Storm Prediction Center[4]

“The Kuril-Kamchatka Arc extends approximately 2,100 km from Hokkaido, Japan along the Kuril Islands and the Pacific coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, until terminating at its intersection with the Aleutian arc south of the Commander Islands, Russia. It marks the region where the Pacific plate subducts into the mantle beneath the Okhotsk mircoplate, a proposed regional subdivision of the larger North America plate. This subduction is responsible for the generation of the Kuril Islands chain, volcanoes along the entire arc, and the deep Kuril-Kamchatka Trench.”

— U.S. Geological Survey, “Seismotectonics of the Kuril-Kamchatka Arc,” on the region around the M5.9 quake[15]

“Lava continues to erupt slowly within the summit crater of Great Sitkin Volcano. Minor earthquakes were detected in the past day. No activity was observed in cloudy satellite and webcam images over the past day.”

— Alaska Volcano Observatory, on Great Sitkin[7]

“No notable activity was detected in distal geophysical monitoring data or satellite images over the past week.”

— Northern Mariana Islands, on Ahyi Seamount[9]

“Sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or other rocks that can naturally be dissolved by groundwater circulating through them. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground. Sinkholes are dramatic because the land usually stays intact for a while until the underground spaces just get too big.”

— U.S. Geological Survey Water Science School, on why sinkholes form[16]

How to Prepare

  • Keep a basic kit: water (one gallon per person per day for several days), food, a battery or hand-crank radio, a whistle, a dust mask and phone chargers.[17]
  • Get alerts: Wireless Emergency Alerts need no sign-up; the FEMA app, NOAA Weather Radio, the USGS Earthquake Notification Service and the USGS Volcano Notification Service are free.
  • Floods: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot can sweep a car away.[18]
  • Earthquakes: Drop, Cover and Hold On.[19]
  • Download the checklist: Be Ready: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Extreme Weather and Sinkholes (PDF), with today’s active hazards first.
