Detention & Deaths

ACLU condemns 'deplorable' conditions at Oklahoma immigration detention center

The American Civil Liberties Union and several other immigrants' rights advocates sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security condemning "deplorable" conditions inside the Diamondback Correctional Facility in Watonga.

The letter cites widespread reports of medical neglect, insufficient food, severe social deprivation and failure to provide detained people with reasonable access to their legal counsel. "These accounts are strikingly consistent in the concerns they raise."[1]

"We have received dozens of harrowing reports about life inside Diamondback," the letter states.

Judge keeps Venezuelan delivery driver shot by ICE in custody for alleged assault

A Venezuelan delivery driver who was shot in his car by a federal immigration agent in Texas will remain in custody on charges that he assaulted an officer while trying to evade arrest, a federal judge ruled Wednesday. Judge Dustin Howell said that the case against Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, 28, should proceed after prosecutors presented body-worn camera footage of the encounter in Austin, in which Garces Perez allegedly struck a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer with his driver's side mirror.[2]

Courts & Lawsuits

The new order for ICE: there are strict rules for detention and high-speed vehicle chases are prohibited

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) modified the rules its agents must follow during detentions, after a series of operations that ended in chases, injuries, and deaths.

The new directive limits vehicle chases and establishes that some maneuvers may only be carried out by officers who have specific training, with the aim of reducing risks during immigration procedures. ICE’s role: What is its mission, and what is it not authorized to do? The agency, part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is responsible for investigating federal crimes and enforcing immigration laws within the United States.[3]

Raids & Arrests

Bond denied for Albertville teen detained by ICE

It's been nine months since an Albertville teenager was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and sent to a detention center in Louisiana.

His bond was denied on Friday. ICE detained Elder Chavez in December 2025 after a traffic stop. Since then, he's been held at the Winn Correctional Center in Louisiana.[4]

Oversight & Policy

Cunningham’s New Ad Says ICE Should Spare Families. His Record Says “Collateral Damage.”

In August, Greg Cunningham said the immigrants swept up in ICE home and workplace raids were “collateral damage.”

The ad, “Keeping NM Safe,” first logged by AdImpact on Oct. 2, is the clearest sign yet that the Republican challenger to Rep. Gabe Vasquez, D-N.M., sees his deportation record as a liability in a swing district along the border. That district includes the Otero County Processing Center, an ICE detention facility Cunningham has fought to keep open.[5]

Now he is on New Mexico television, in a spot co-produced with the National Republican Congressional Committee, promising that his immigration enforcement would leave “families following the legal process” alone.

US immigration crackdown: As ICE readies Louisiana facility for children and families, faith leaders hold vigil

Part of the Trump administration’s efforts to ramp up deportations, the facility – which will hold unaccompanied minors and families – is situated beside an airport that has become known as the country’s busiest hub for deportation flights.

Local community activists and faith leaders from Louisiana and beyond marched and prayed on Thursday at the fenced-off barracks and trailers at England Airpark, where federal immigration officials are preparing to open a privately-run facility to hold immigrant families and unaccompanied children awaiting deportation. The 528-bed facility – which sits next to Alexandria International Airport and is expected to open imminently – will be the second detention facility designated for children and families under President Donald Trump. Community members and religious leaders walk toward the new family and children detention centre during an interfaith vigil at England Airpark in Alexandria, Louisiana, on Thursday, 1st October, 2026.[6]
