Early reports about attacks are often incomplete and sometimes wrong. This page reports only what named outlets and officials say, in their words, and is updated as reporting changes. If you are near an incident, follow instructions from local authorities and call your local emergency number.
On Friday, October 2, police in the UK charged a 28-year-old man from Rotherham with preparing acts of terrorism, including against Nigel Farage MP.[1]
Counter Terrorism Policing announced the charge in the evening. The suspect is Joshua Kerry, of Byrley Road, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, the police statement says.[1]
What police say
Kerry faces one count of preparation of terrorist acts, contrary to section 5(1)(a) of the Terrorism Act 2006. The Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charge.[1]
Police say the charge relates to activity alleged to have taken place between May 31, 2024 and July 8, 2026.[1]
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, the Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, said: “We have been running a hugely intensive and complex investigation for some time.”[1]
She added that the investigation was led by “a dedicated team of detectives, analysts, and forensic experts, working on multiple lines of enquiry, which has resulted in this very serious charge.”[1]
Kerry is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, October 7.[1]
A separate case
RTÉ reports that Kerry is also accused of murdering former MP Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead in July. The police statement on the terrorism charge does not mention that case, and neither document says how, if at all, the two are connected.[2]
RTÉ quotes Crown prosecutor Frank Ferguson: “We have made the decision to prosecute Joshua Kerry for engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts.”[2]
What we do not know
Police have not said what the alleged preparation involved, or what it was alleged to be aimed at beyond the reference to Farage. They have released no details of evidence.
A charge is an allegation. Kerry has not been convicted of anything.
