Coroner confirms via DNA and dental records: the body is Nolan Wells; family retains Ben Crump
Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd confirmed through DNA testing and dental records that the body recovered off Horn Island is Nolan Xavier Wells. The family has retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump. The autopsy was conducted at the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office Coast Lab; a toxicology report is still pending, and investigators have said there is currently no indication of drug or alcohol involvement.

United Cajun Navy details the search that preceded the recovery
Incident Commander Josh Gill said the volunteer search-and-rescue group got word from Wells’s mother and a cousin and “jumped into action really quickly,” launching aircraft around 6 a.m. Monday. Gill said Wells had last been seen “talking to a girl on that north end” of Horn Island and had “not been heard from in close to 24 hours” by the time the search was in full swing.

A U.S. National Park Service ranger found a body in the water just offshore of the northwest end of Horn Island around 8:45 a.m. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said the recovery “does match the description” of Wells, though formal identification awaited DNA testing and dental records. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office established a command post at the Lake Mars Boat Launch in Ocean Springs. By evening, the Gulf Islands National Seashore, U.S. Coast Guard, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, Biloxi Fire Department, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Fire Service, and the United Cajun Navy had all joined the search for Wells.

Minutes later, the sheriff’s office released Wells’s description publicly: an 18-year-old Black male, 6’1″, 180 pounds, last seen wearing blue swim trunks, no shirt, and sunglasses. A correction was later issued clarifying the trunks were blue, not black as first reported.

Nolan Wells last seen on Horn Island as friends' boat departs without him
Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old 2025 graduate of Ocean Springs High School and rising sophomore wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, traveled to Horn Island by private boat with a group of friends to celebrate the Fourth of July. He was last seen around 3 p.m., and friends told reporters they assumed he had caught another ride back to the mainland when the group’s boat departed without him. His best friend, Jayvon Williams, 17, said he last saw Nolan around 4 p.m. and recalled Nolan telling him “he loved him” before they separated on the island. Wells’s phone was later found separated from him and returned to his mother.
