Here is what shaped Black America and civil rights today.

1. White Supremacist Group Activity: White Supremacists Turn an SPLC Indictment Into a Recruiting Pitch

Within hours of a federal grand jury’s April 2026 indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center on wire fraud, bank fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges, white supremacist influencers on Telegram, Gab and other platforms were celebrating the arraignment and spinning it into a recruiting pitch.^[1]

• The indictment alleges the SPLC, a nonprofit legal advocacy group, secretly funneled more than US$3 million in donated funds to people associated with violent extremist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan Nations.
• Eight informants received the money between 2014 and 2023, according to U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, while the SPLC has denied the charges, is seeking dismissal and calls them “vindictive prosecution.”
• SPLC interim president Bryan Fair has stated that the informant program “saved lives” and reflected decades of dangerous civil rights work.
• A Telegram search conducted on May 6 identified 22 posts mentioning the SPLC across at least six white nationalist channels, most appearing within 72 hours of the indictment and repeating a small set of claims rather than engaging in sustained discussion.
• The Super Sincere Alpha GOONMAXXING Aryan Sigma Patriot channel wrote: “The SPLC is a hate group,” while the White Lives Matter Official Telegram channel urged users to “become an activist for your race” while referencing the SPLC as an opposing force.

2. Police Brutality: Family of Ayham Babidi Questions Deadly Des Plaines Police Shooting

Ayham Babidi was shot and killed by police in Des Plaines, Illinois, on Wednesday, and his family says the force used against him makes no sense.^[2]

• Police said Babidi was armed with an electric hedge trimmer and ignored officers’ orders to drop it.
• Officers released new details about the Wednesday afternoon shooting on Thursday.
• His family said he had struggled with mental health issues.
• The shooting happened in the north suburban Chicago community of Des Plaines.
• His family said they are baffled by the officers’ use of force.

3. ICE: Argentine Soccer Player Describes 22 Days in ICE Detention: ‘It Was Torture’

Matías Pourrain, a professional soccer midfielder, was arrested at a Florida airport on Aug. 6 and held by ICE for 22 days.^[3]

• Pourrain plays midfield for United Premier Soccer.
• He was arrested Aug. 6 at a Florida airport.
• He was detained for 22 days.
• Pourrain described the detention as torture.
• His account was published Sept. 10, 2026.

4. Executive Orders: Keeping DEI Didn’t Cost Companies a Thing, New Research Finds

A new UC Berkeley study of S&P 500 companies found no meaningful difference in stock returns or revenue between firms that kept their DEI commitments after President Trump’s January 2025 Executive Order 14173 and those that rolled them back.^[4]

• The paper, titled “Markets Do Not Punish Firms for Maintaining DEI,” was published through the Democracy Policy Lab at UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy.
• Co-author Jacob Grumbach, an associate professor at UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy, said he wanted to study what happens when large firms resist political pressure, calling it “new territory in the American economy.”
• Because companies rarely describe their DEI programs the same way, Grumbach’s team checked four factors — public statements, regulatory filings, shareholder votes and third-party tracking — and he said “no matter which measure you use, you find the same findings.”
• On the revenue side, the average effect across every version of the analysis came out to exactly 0.00.
• Grumbach called Costco and Target “the most consumer salient pairing,” citing a Target boycott “led mostly by Black churches and American liberals in general” after Target ended DEI publicly while Costco “really publicly doubled down,” shifting spending between the two without producing a lasting stock performance gap.

5. Hate Crimes: Manhattan DA Files Hate Crime Charges in Central Synagogue Stabbings

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said Wednesday that the city is bringing hate crime charges against Larry Montes, 46, who pleaded not guilty to disrupting Shabbat services at Central Synagogue in Midtown and attacking two people on Aug. 14.^[5]

• Bragg’s office said Montes was indicted on two hate crime counts of second-degree criminal mischief and one count each of hate crime second-degree attempted assault, hate crime third-degree assault and second-degree criminal interference with religious worship, “among other charges.”
• Bragg stated that “places of worship should be safe havens, not scenes of violence and hate” and that Montes allegedly endangered congregants “all while spewing bigoted language.”
• Court watcher Serena Smulansky told JNS that Montes “didn’t say a word” at the arraignment and “looked like he might fall asleep.”
• According to Smulansky, the prosecutor said Montes declared himself to be “Hashem,” Hebrew for God, ruined more than $7,000 worth of candlesticks and punched a woman in the face, causing her to fall and injure herself.
• At proceedings in a separate case the same day, Raul Morales, 51, pleaded not guilty to allegedly stabbing two men near Upper West Side synagogues on July 23, with Bragg’s office stating investigators found antisemitic text messages on his phone.

Looking Ahead

The Southern Poverty Law Center is seeking dismissal of the federal wire fraud, bank fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges brought against it in April 2026. In Manhattan, Larry Montes and Raul Morales have both pleaded not guilty to hate crime charges in separate attacks on synagogue worshippers.
